I apologise for my misleading post titles, because this one is not really going to be about drummer boys. If you're a regular reader of this blog you'll know I'm not really sorry either. And if you're a drummer, please stop reading after this full stop:.
At the risk of sounding like a dud, I have never understood what the big deal about drummers is. I mean percussion is AWEsome and all that but I have seen so many "chicks" go hearts-in-eyes over drummer boys. I don't really get this, unless the boy is really (and I mean REALLY!) cute.
My 9 year old nephew is into drumming; he's got a drum kit in his basement, though they (basement and drum kit) belong to his dad. I have very little doubt of him being great at it; this kid could say the alphabet in dinosaur names (real ones, not Barney & Dino) at the age of 1.5 after all. To me he's already a palaeontologist. Yes, no doubt he'll rock on, but I wish he'd have chosen another musical instrument, even his vocal cords.
I dig musicians, I really do, just not drummers and I cannot even reason with this, because I know drumming requires a lot more than I think it does and I am not only being unfair but also extremely stupid by voicing what ought to remain in my head. (NB: Drummer Boys is the first topic I thought of from D, so bear with me.)
Here are a few questions I've always thought of but never thought to ask before D day. Is drumming considered more macho than strumming? Do people look down on boys who play other instruments, say the harp? Okay, maybe not the harp, but more common and non-heavenly ones like the guitar or the piano or the cello? I suppose some guitarists have groupies squishing them to death but what about the guy on the violin? Does he get panties hurled at him too? I think I have a very specific type among musicians and it is "Anybody but the drummer boy (unless he's made of chocolate)!"
What is it about drummer boys that makes people go pa rum pum pum pum the moment they hear the words drum/ drummer/ drummest? Of course I'm saying all this because I really like guys who play instruments like the piano or the fiddle or the sax or the tabla or the santoor or the hundreds of other instruments out there. I melt like makkhan for these. Anyway, I digress.... What is the big deal about drummer boys again?
Disclaimer: Every question in this post is rhetorical. Answers are welcome, but comments will be moderated. Thank you for reading; please stop by tomorrow, I will have more tolerable things to say, I promise.
